From the outside, the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum doesn’t seem much, but a step inside takes you into a fascinating assortment of displays and exhibits relating to technology and transport. This impressive collection is named after Edison protégé and pioneering Croatian inventor Nikola Tesla.
The museum houses every curious innovation from trams to steam trains, amazing replicas of a coal mine, a beehive display and even a planetarium. It is also one of the best things to do in Zagreb.

2. Mimara Museum

Housed in what used to be a secondary school are the finest art collections in Zagreb which opened in 1895. It’s still quite a mystery how this stunning collection was obtained by the museum’s founder, controversial art historian Ante Topić Mimara.
Whatever the story was behind it, though, the Minara Museum is one of the Zagreb museums worth visiting. As it contains some of the best works by art luminaries such as Canaletto, Goya, Holbein, Turner, and Van Dyck.

An ingenious concept if you’re into both history and architecture, the Zagreb City Museum features the evolution of the Croatian capital’s landscape. With displays that depict Zagreb from prehistory to its present appearance, the collection is quite fascinating.

4. Museum of Broken Relationships Zagreb

A strange collection of items that was started by an actual former couple, the Museum of Broken Relationships is one of the more eclectic and unusual places you’ll visit in Zagreb. Found in the Upper Town, this place houses a diverse collection of items that are leftovers from former couples.
These items include strange souvenirs, letters, trinkets, and even undergarments. The museum has gained enough popularity over the years that a US version was founded in Southern California.

5. Croatian History Museum
The Croatian History Museum has some of the most impressive permanent collections detailing the unique history of the country. Formerly housed in what used to be the National Museum, it now occupies a modest building in the upper town.
It hosts a variety of temporary exhibits and has been among the most popular museums since the Homeland War for independence during the early 1990s.

6. Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb

Established in 1954, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb is home to 9,000 masterpieces. This collection includes those donated by private art collectors, such as works by Benko Horvat and Josip Seissel.
Most of the displays here are not permanent, but the museum periodically hosts themed exhibitions of works by Croatian artists as well as international ones.

7. Croatian Natural History Museum

The massive collections of the Croatian Natural History Museum are housed in a palace formerly owned by the Hungarian noblemen Duke Várkony, who also founded Zagreb’s first public theatre in 1797.
The specimens contained in this museum are chosen and collected by the Croatian Academy of Sciences. About a hundred thousand of these items feature local flora, so you can just imagine how extensive their collections are.
There are also exhibits of fossils, minerals, and rocks, as well as an impressive zoological section.

8. Ethnographic Museum

The Ethnographic Museum was founded by textile trader Salamon Berger, who moved to Zagreb in the 1870s. This museum has a wide range of exhibits featuring clothing, décor, furniture and Croatian musical instruments, as well as curious items from Africa, Polynesia, and South America.
Close to celebrating its centennial year, most of those on display at the Ethnographic Museum was personally chosen and collected by its founder.

9. Archaeological Museum Zagreb

The impressive Archaeological Museum houses almost half a million artifacts, an overwhelming number even if you’re an enthusiast. It is suggested that first-time visitors should check out some of its best exhibits, such as the Vučedol Dove, a vessel from 2,500 B.C. which was discussed in 1938.
The Vučedol Dove’s ornate design and markings are said to depict seasons and collections, which could be considered as among the first calendars in the west. The museum also has exhibits showcasing ancient Greek, Egyptian, Etruscan and Roman artifacts that one should definitely visit.

10. Museum of Arts & Crafts, Zagreb

A one of a kind museum in Zagreb that primarily features traditional crafts, the Museum of Arts & Crafts is housed in a neo-Renaissance palace designed by Hermann Bollé. The museum’s establishment got its inspiration from the English Arts & Crafts movement, to preserve local crafts while making sure it also appeals to the evolving aesthetic preferences of its patrons.
The massive collection features ceramics, clocks, furniture, equipment and paintings that span several hundreds of years. Be sure to watch out for the museum’s temporary exhibitions too, such as the recent The Baroque Splendour of Venice.

11. Museum of Naïve Art, Zagreb

The first of its kind in the world, the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art was established in 1952. At present, it is home to more than 1,900 art pieces – drawings, paintings, and sculptures that were done from the 1930s to the 1980s.
The first room features the works of Ivan Generalić (1914-1992), known as the firstNaïve or self-taught artist in the country, as well as the founder of Hlebine School.
The next part features the works of Dragan Gaži, Ivan Večenaj and Mijo Kovačić, each with a distinct artistic style. The other rooms have more domestic pieces such as the one from Ivan Lacković as well as works by some German, French and Italian artists.

12. Meštrović Atelier

The Meštrović Atelier is in the former home of a great Croatian sculptor, Ivan Meštrović. The world-renowned artist has such an outstanding body of work that’s also seen in other parts of the world. Some of these are Canadian Phalanx in Ottawa and The Bowman and The Spearman in Chicago.
In Croatia, there’s the Gregory of Nin in Split, the impressionist installation ‘Well of Life’ in front of the Croatian National Theatre, the entire Meštrović Pavilion and the Nikola Tesla monument in Masaryk Street, right here in Zagreb.
Aside from his works, the Meštrović Atelier features sculptures in the grand lobby and garden, while most of the woodcraft is in the preserved original interior. You can also see his former studio, and a stunning collection of drawings, prints, reliefs, sketches, and original furniture. A must for those visiting Zagreb, the Meštrović Atelier shouldn’t be left out of your Zagreb museum-hopping itinerary.
